Alan Rootham, who served the Middle Level Commissioners as their lockkeeper at Stanground near Peterborough for over 40 years, retired on 31st December 2006.
Alan's association with the Lock in fact goes back even further, since his father William preceded him as lockkeeper, and Alan often assisted him as a boy; thus setting the scene for a lifelong vocation.
Between them William and Alan totalled 70 years service and the family connection continues, with Alan's daughter Tina Rootham-Hayward, taking over as lockkeeper from 1st January 2007. As a girl, Tina in turn often assisted Alan with his duties and the Commissioners are extremely pleased to be able to appoint someone who is already competent and familiar with the Lock and to be able to continue the Rootham "tradition".
Alan and his wife Christina will be moving only a short distance from the Lock, into Stanground village and may occassionally still be seen at the Lock, assisting Tina on a "consultancy basis".
